Prof. Michael Henein is a Consultant Cardiologist and Professor of Cardiology in London, with a sub-specialist focus on non-invasive cardiology and cardiac imaging and over 40 years of experience in echocardiography. Because Prof. Michael Henein both performs and interprets the imaging himself and manages the clinical care that follows, patients are usually able to discuss the findings and what they mean during the same visit, rather than waiting for a report to be passed between departments.
Who needs a private echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is often recommended for people with breathlessness on exertion, ankle swelling, palpitations, a heart murmur, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart muscle or valve disease. It is also used to monitor known conditions, to assess the heart before certain treatments, and to reassure patients who simply want a clear picture of how their heart is working. Patients from London, other UK cities and abroad.
What to expect on the day
1
You lie comfortably on your left side, and small sticky electrodes are placed to track your heart rhythm during the scan.
2
A probe with clear gel is moved gently across your chest. The scan is painless and usually takes around 30 minutes.
3
Professor Henein reviews the moving images with you straight away, in plain language.
4
A full written report is sent to you and, where you wish, to your GP shortly after your visit.
Types of echocardiogram offered
The standard scan is a transthoracic echocardiogram, performed through the chest wall. Where more detailed valve imaging is needed, a transoesophageal echocardiogram can be arranged, and where the heart needs to be assessed while working harder, a stress echocardiogram is used. The right test is chosen with you at consultation, so that imaging matches the clinical question rather than following a fixed protocol.
Why choose Professor Henein for a private echocardiogram
Cardiac imaging is Professor Henein’s particular area of expertise, developed over a career that includes fifteen years at Royal Brompton Hospital and sixteen years practising between England and Umeå in Sweden. As editor of the many international journals and a supervisor of international PhD students, he brings both clinical and academic depth to the interpretation of every scan.
Because he provides both the clinical care and the imaging, and manages the complete patient journey from diagnosis through treatment, any next steps flow directly from the scan without delay or duplication.
Common questions about a private echocardiogram
Is an echocardiogram painful?
No. An echocardiogram is painless. A small probe with gel is moved gently across the chest, and no needles or radiation are involved.
How long does an echocardiogram take?
Most scans take around 30 minutes, and the findings are usually discussed with you on the same day.
Do I need to prepare for an echocardiogram?
No special preparation is required. You can eat and drink normally beforehand.
What can an echocardiogram detect?
It shows the heart muscle, the valves and the pumping function, helping to investigate breathlessness, palpitations, murmurs and many other cardiac conditions.
Will I receive a written report?
Yes. A full written report is provided after your scan, and it can be shared with your GP where you wish. The findings are also discussed with you on the day.
